Lawyers Optimizing for ChatGPT Now Need Yelp

yelp logoJuly 23, 2026, Axios dropped an exclusive news article “Yelp partners with ChatGPT to surface reviews”.

The article explains that Yelp is licensing reviews, photos, and other business information to OpenAI. This content will provide ChatGPT with local recommendation data.

Do People Use ChatGPT to Find Lawyers?

As of July 2026, people do ask ChatGPT for information on legal matters but the vast majority of people still turn to Google to hire an attorney. OpenAI’s own data shows only 2.1% of people inquire about products or services.

So, yes, some people do look for a lawyer, plumber, or HVAC repair company on ChatGPT but it’s rare.

ChatGPT wants to change this.

ChatGPT Enters Local:

In addition to the content, Yelp’s “request a quote” feature will also show up in ChatGPT’s local searches. This might not apply to personal injury attorneys, or, maybe it will.

Attorneys on Yelp currently get a “Request a consultation” button on their profile.

The move was likely welcomed by Yelp. The agreement doesn’t prevent Yelp from licensing it’s data to other AI companies, and Yelp will benefit from exposure off of their own platform, which should be helpful since the falling out with Google (see Yelp v. Google).

Yelp Could Become More Important.

Yelp already supplies data to Apple Maps. Most Yelp users still use it to find restaurants, but with Yelp’s content making it’s way into ChatGPT it shouldn’t be completely ignored.

For the law firm who wants exposure everywhere, it makes sense to start putting some effort into Yelp now.

Additionally, if you do a Google search for “Smith Law Firm Reviews”, Yelp likely already ranks at the top of Google for this search query. Like it or not, people are seeing your Yelp page.

How To Get Active on Yelp:

This merits it’s own article, but here are the biggest tips.

  1. Do not game Yelp. They will catch you.
  2. Paying for Yelp doesn’t mean you’ll bypass their review filter. It’s been proven in court – that’s just not how the algorithm works.
  3. Do figure out a way to get past clients to review you on Yelp.

Your GEO Strategy:

There is an awful lot of snake oil, misinformation, and repackaged SEO out there, along with scare tactics telling attorneys they must do this or that to show up in ChatGPT. The most important thing to focus on right now is reviews everywhere. We’ve been stating that on this blog for years and it continues to be sage advice. Don’t neglect Facebook, BBB, AVVO, or Yelp or other platforms.
