ChatGPT Ads Are Coming to Law Firms

On January 16, 2026, OpenAI announced they will begin testing ads in the US in February 2026. Law firms we work with have expressed interest in this.

The announcement says:

“To start, we plan to test ads at the bottom of answers in ChatGPT when there’s a relevant sponsored product or service based on your current conversation. Ads will be clearly labeled and separated from the organic answer. You’ll be able to learn more about why you’re seeing that ad, or dismiss any ad and tell us why. During our test, we will not show ads in accounts where the user tells us or we predict that they are under 18, and ads are not eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health or politics.”

Are People Finding Lawyers on ChatGPT?

As of 2026, ChatGPT traffic to attorney websites averages 0.4% of their total traffic.

Informational search queries are definitely reducing law firm traffic, but, the number of people who need to hire an attorney is not necessarily being reduced.

The vast majority of people are still turning to Google for finding local businesses and attorneys.

Will ChatGPT Allow Personal Injury Ads?

Please note that “health” is a regulated topic. Google Ads, for example, prohibits remarketing to people facing hardships such as health conditions. If ChatGPT allows Personal Injury Attorneys to advertise remains yet to be determined.
