What is a Bar Conference?
A bar conference is an annual event that is typically hosted by each state’s bar association. In some cases, like California, states will have multiple bar associations based on where lawyers are geographically located, what sectors of law they practice, or other unifying factors.
State bar conferences or annual meetings are held by just about every state. Many of these events invite legal industry thought leaders to give lectures and host panels. Speakers can range from lawyers to news correspondents to athletes – anyone who can provide insightful information that will benefit the state’s legal network.
In addition to thought leadership, bar conferences provide a great opportunity for lawyers to network. Between sponsored lunches, happy hours, and evening socials, bar conferences encourage lawyers from all industries to connect and collaborate. Networking is an essential part of building a successful practice’s referral program. When networking strategically, a lawyer can leave a conference with several additional referral partners from whom they can acquire client leads.
Furthermore, law firms are able to connect with marketing and operations leaders who sponsor the events. There are often sponsors who provide products that are designed to make law firms operate more efficiently. From case management software to legal marketing firms, lawyers can explore products and services to make their lives easier.
Who Can Attend Bar Conferences?
Bar conferences are typically open to lawyers and legal marketing professionals who are members of the state’s bar association. However, some bar conferences are open to lawyers who are interested in joining bar associations but haven’t committed to the association yet. Naturally, the fees are typically higher for non-members than members.
Sponsors are also invited to the bar conferences. There is typically a trade show floor where sponsors set up booths to showcase their products and services to the attendees.
Are Bar Conferences in Person or Online in 2022?
In the wake of Covid-19, many bar conferences had been exclusively online only. In 2022, many bar conferences are offering hybrid events where guests can choose whether to attend in-person or virtually.
